I admire Scott Robinson for two things -- his superb photography skills and his honesty. One would think Robinson, who grew up in Owensboro, Ky., would be a motor sports aficionado after all, Owensboro is the hometown of NASCAR drivers Darrell and Michael Waltrip, Jeremy Mayfield, Jeff, David and Mark Green and motorcycle racer Nicky Hayden. Scott writes in his Acknowledgements, "I began this project knowing a lot about photography, but little about NASCAR." Bravo. One other interesting slant to Robinson's book is that it features the PEOPLE of NASCAR NOT the cars.
How good are the photographs? I was a professional photographer for more than twenty years and would be proud to claim any of Robinson's images as my own. There are 220 photographs gorgeously arranged in the book's 192 pages. The printing by Motorbooks is magnificent. The dust cover displays six portraits Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, Jack Roush, Lisa Smokstad, Jim Long and Ben Sanders that seem to jump off the page. Whether it is a "spot lacquering" or a special lamination process the result is beautiful.
Photographs range from two-page spreads to extreme close up portraits. The first photograph in the book is a macro shot of Richard Petty's signature belt buckle that speaks volumes about the seven-time NASCAR champion. The images are tastefully arranged with plenty of "white space" as if you were viewing them on gallery walls.
